DESCRIPTION:TREM2 is arguably the most potent genetic risk factor for spor
adic Alzheimer's disease. It is a scavenger receptor recognising generic
molecular patterns on cellular debris and amyloid fibrils. Reduced levels
of TREM2 on the surface of the brain's phagocytic cells\, the microglia\,
is associated with disease risk. Protecting TREM2 from proteolytic shedd
ing from the microglial surface is a potential therapeutic goal.
