DESCRIPTION:Compact binary mergers involving neutron stars have long been
thought to be the likely progenitors of short-duration\nGRBs\, and have in
creasingly been posited as the dominant\nsite of heavy r-process nucleosyn
thesis in the universe.\nThe recent LIGO/Virgo discovery of the binary neu
 tron star\nmerger GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart\nrepresent
 a landmark in multimessenger astronomy\, and\nprovide important insights i
nto these long-standing issues.\nI will review (at least some of) the key
findings \nand indicate future directions for the field.
