DESCRIPTION:The presence of ice in rivers is an important phen
omenon to be considered in the development of wate
r resources in cold regions. Ice formation can aff
ect the design\, operation\, and maintenance of hy
draulic engineering facilities in cold regions. Ri
ver ice phenomena involve complex interactions bet
ween hydrodynamic\, mechanical\, and thermal proce
sses\, as well as the ambient hydro-meteorological
conditions and channel morphology. This presentat
ion will discuss the current state of knowledge an
d unresolved issues on modeling river ice dynamics
and the associated thermal processes. These issue
s include ice jam formation and release during fre
eze up and breakup\, ice cover breakup\, frazil ic
e evolution\, and anchor ice formation and release
. The possible similarities between these river ic
e phenomena and sea ice will be discussed.
