DESCRIPTION:There has been a huge upsurge in interest in animal cognition
over the past decade\, with an increasing diversity in the species and con
texts investigated. There has also been a significant growth in interest i
n examining cognition in animals outside the laboratory\, in their natural
environment. I will use examples from hummingbirds solving foraging tasks
and zebra finches building nests to illustrate ways to test cognition in
the wild and to point to a number of problems that arise from the enthusia
sm to examine cognition in such a diversity of species and contexts.
