DESCRIPTION:Discourses on the role of the state in development have been c
haracterised by the state-market dichotomy across the ideological spectrum
. On the one hand\, this dichotomy is seen as rooted in market fundamental
ism and therein used to make the case for the supremacy of the market over
the state. But others have shown that it is present also in more progress
ive arguments for state-led development. This seminar reflects on how anal
ysis that is grounded in Africa’s empirical experiences of transition pr
oblematises strict delineations between these milieus.
