Abstract
There have recently been claims in the scientific literature for human like cognitive abilities in dogs. For example the acquisition of object label names through a process known as fast mapping (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3794079.stm). However simpler cognitive processes may also explain this process . In this presentation we consider the different explanations and available experimental evidence, in relation to the acquisition of object label names by dogs and the implication for animal cognition research.
