Abstract
I discuss the formulation of individual-based models as master equations, which allows use to be made of well-established methods from the theory of these equations to analyse their behaviours. In many cases large and well-defined stochastic cycles arise, even though the corresponding deterministic equations predict the system will approach a fixed point. The relation of these so-called quasi-cycles to limit cycles is described as are the existence of quasi-cycles about limit cycles.
