Abstract
The lower Sirwan/upper Diyala river valley is located between the Zagros highlands and the Mesopotamian lowlands in northeast Iraq. Traditionally, the history of this transitional highland-lowland landscape has tended to be narrated as a story of intersecting marginalities: environmental, economic, cultural, and political. The regional and site-based data gathered by the Sirwan Regional Project since 2013 allows us to reconsider and challenge these topoi and to develop a local, archaeological history of early Sirwan communities and lifeways.
