OOEW09 - Strings, CFT and Monopoles: Celebrating Peter Goddard's 80th birthday

The Virasoro algebra is central in all Peter’s work.  It first arose in S-matrix theory, which is an attempt to study fundamental physics while feeding in only minimal information about spacetime. In return the Virasoro algebra constrains the possible nature of spacetime, and perhaps reveals a great deal about it. But the algebra has some strange features, and plays unexpected roles.
