The magnetic field of the earth, which protects us from the solar wind, is subject to occasional reversals in polarity. The mechanism for these reversals has not been identified. We propose one such mechanism here, and describe a simple model which embodies the mechanism. The model is free of adjustable parameters, and its predictions are in line with the paleomagnetic evidence.
