Abstract
Processes involving recurrent events arise in many contexts, and there is often an interest in the presence and nature of time trends. In this talk I will discuss concepts of trend in processes of recurrent events, and methods for assessing and modelling trend. Pitfalls in the examination of trend will be considered and in particular, the role of unattributed heterogeneity across multiple individuals. An examination of trends in the pattern of repeated psychiatric hospitalization episodes for persons with affective disorder will be described.
