Abstract
In mid 2010, to my considerable surprise, I found myself to be the proud owner of the genome sequence of the domestic pigeon. Although it had been on my list of things to accomplish, I found myself in the awkward situation of having enthusiastic colleagues at BGI pushing to publish it, but no story to tell. Never one to turn down a challenge, I spent the next 3 years trying to rectify this, and thus commenced a burgeoning love affair with the flying rat of our cities. What we did, and what it taught me about genomics, is the story I will tell.
