Advanced Structural Characterisation Techniques for Amorphous Materials
- đ¤ Speaker: J.M. Cole, Surfaces, Microscopy & Fracture Group, Cavendish Laboratory

- đ Venue: Mott Seminar Room, Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics
Abstract
The seminar will begin with an introduction to the case study of rare-earth phosphate glasses, their optical and magnetic materials-interest, and an overview of the structural work that determines their basic structural units. The inaccessibility of conventional diffraction and spectroscopy methods towards the minimum rare-earth distance, which dictates their physical properties, is explained. There follows a presentation of the development of several novel and complex diffraction methods that help reveal this materials-centred important R…R separation: via anomalous X-ray and neutron scattering, and a magnetic difference experiment.
