Abstract
I will review the science aims of the upcoming ESA PLATO mission. In particular its key and unique ability to detect and characterise extra-solar planets down to Earth masses, in the habitable zone around solar type stars.
I will comment on the current technical development of the mission, and note the role that the IoA, Cambridge will undertake in the development and operation of the extrasolar planet analysis system.
