Abstract
One of the greatest challenges facing civil engineers in the 21st century is the stewardship of ageing infrastructure. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the networks of tunnels and pipelines that lie beneath the major cities around the world. The talk will introduce research projects that bridge advances in modelling large-scale engineering infrastructure with advances in fibre optics, micro electro mechanical sensors and wireless sensor networks for monitoring underground infrastructure.
Series This talk is part of the Horizon: A Sensory World. Novel Sensor Technologies and Applications series.
