Abstract
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have played a fundamental part in the advancement of gas turbine engines for both the aerospace and generation industries helping to increase engine efficiencies and component life. However, TBCs suffer from a number of life limiting issues primarily oxidation of the bond coat but also from impact damage caused by both small and large particles travelling through the engine. This seminar will discuss the various aspects of erosion of TBCs and how temperature, microstructure, particle properties, impact angle and TBC composition affect the rate of material loss due to impact.
